Artist Statement
By utilizing my hometown landscape as the subject across multiple techniques and mediums, I seek to record a blend of personal and collective memories within Poland, Ohio, resulting in an authentic experience of growing up and residing in a small Midwestern town. The sentimental quality of the locations, stories, and encounters I revisit, combined with the fleeting and ephemeral nature of the environment, almost serves as a historical record. Despite my instinct to cling to the past, my work cannot be separated from the fundamental factor of transformation.
Though I work in a variety of media, I am driven by my hometown’s history – whether that manifests in motifs, artistic processes, or imagery. I am inspired by collective memories and tales that existed before I did, which are in danger of being lost. Much of my work is born from noticing and listening, coalescing to create an archive of experiences, musings, and introspections.
